Construction Industry Insight for the First Half of 2011
The construction industry is ever changing and recent statistics from Glenigan show that during June 2011 the industrial sector suffered from the largest decline, and that the first half of 2011 ended as a whole with yet more retrenchment.
The first half of 2011 saw a decline in both public and private construction projects. Residential housing suffered particularly due to government funding cuts in social housing projects and an unfortunate stagnant house market. Other sectors including education and health have seen a decline in project starts, with the near future facing a similar picture. The overall decline in all projects is set to last in the short term which means less building tenders for construction workers in the near future.
Wales saw a 40% drop in new projects compared to a year ago and the North West and East Midlands both experienced a 39% drop in project starts. However, the final quarter of 2011 is said to improve for construction companies in regard to project starts.
The retail sector performed well with a 14% increase in project starts in comparison to June 2010. Although high inflation rates and uncertain economic prospects have affected consumer confidence, supermarkets are still investing in new premises. The community and amenity sector also wasn’t impacted by a drop in new project starts with a 6% increase compared to June 2010. However, the value of construction starts is expected to decrease over the coming year which is not so good news for building contractors.
The improvement forecast over the final quarter of 2011 is partly due to poor business conditions and harsh weather conditions this time last year, meaning project starts declined at the end of 2010. This allows 2011 to have an improved final quarter should these conditions improve on last year.
